The Liverpool midfielder looks set to depart the club at the end of the season
From wanting to sell Georginio Wijnaldum prior to this season to now pulling out all stops to hang onto the midfielder, Liverpool’s stance on the player has changed over the course of the season. At a time when injuries have rocked the club’s ship, Wijnaldum has escalated his worth not only with his fitness but performances on the pitch as well.
However, despite the best of their efforts, its looking increasingly unlikely that Liverpool will be able to swing the wind in their favour. Despite dishing out a new contract to the player, Wijnaldum has refused to sign the extension.
Wijnaldum Continues To Keep Liverpool On Hold
Waiting for Wijnaldum to take a decision since December when they put the terms of their new deal on paper, Liverpool look resigned to lose out on the player. Fabrizio Romano has provided a new update on the player’s situation, one which doesn’t augur well for Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano said while writing on Twitter: There’s still no agreement between Wijnaldum and Liverpool to extend the contract. Last bid was made in early December, Gini has not accepted yet. It’s getting complicated after 7 months of negotiations… Liverpool are still waiting for the definitive answer.
Wijnaldum who sees his contract at the club run out come June is said to be extremely eager to switch to Barcelona. A move to the La Liga club was on the card back in the summer of 2020 with Ronald Koeman said to be interested in the player but a move never materialised.
However, Wijnaldum is quietly confident of making the switch come the end of the ongoing season. The player is currently free to engage in negotiations with other clubs as he aspires to leave Liverpool as a free agent.
