Afghanistan might have succumbed to their sixth loss on the trot but their latest one against India saw them winning plentiful hearts. From restricting India to 224/8 to almost chasing the total, Afghanistan had almost written the script for the biggest upset of the tournament.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib confessed to missing an opportunity to beat a team like India in a tournament like the World Cup.
“We are sad because we have a chance to beat this kind of team. In the World Cup, it’s a big achievement for any team. But the big teams, they don’t give you a single chance. Today we missed an opportunity to win, to beat India, one of the best sides,” Naib was quoted as saying.

“Nabi played according to the plan”
All-rounder Mohammad Nabi’s 14th half-century played a vital role in Afghanistan remaining in the match but the veteran cricketer couldn’t take his team across the victory line. Being asked if Nabi delayed playing the big shots, Naib mentioned that the same was part of the team’s plan.
“Today, [Mohammad] Nabi showed the skills, how he’s one of the best players of Afghanistan and also in the world. Actually, we planned that we’re going to take the match at the end to the (last) five overs. So Nabi played really well according to the plan.

“When we chase this kind of total like 220, 250, [our] one or two of our middle order should go to 50 or 80. Thirty, 20 runs is not enough. The score is chaseable, but I think we didn’t take our responsibilities, especially on the batting side,” Naib said.

There is no hiding to the fact that Afghanistan stand no chance of qualifying for the knockout matches now. Despite the same, Naib talked about taking a lot of positives from playing against India. “We’re taking a lot of positives from here, so when you’re playing this kind of team, you learn a lot of things. We learn it with our mistakes,” Naib added.
On a funny note, Naib ended up warning Bangladesh ahead of their match against them tomorrow at Southampton. “Hum to doobe hai sanam, tumko lekar doobenge [We are already drowning darling, but we’ll take you with us],” Naib concluded.
