While Virat Kohli’s team has been the talk of the town lately, the Indian Women’s Ice Hockey team has also created history in the last few days. (History created by the Indian Women’s Ice Hockey Team !)

The Indian Ice hockey team has claimed their first ever victory in an international tournament in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia in Bangkok, Thailand. In spite of an acute lack of funds, the Indian team managed to scrap it’s way into the competition.

In a desperate attempt to secure funds for themselves, the Indian Women’s Ice Hockey team resorted to crowd funding. Luckily for them nearly 5000 donors came to their aid and they acquired the funds to pay for their training and equipment.  The team also had a short training stint in Kyrgyzstan.

In order to repay the support that was shown to them, the Indian team put on a dogged display in Bangkok. Tsewang Chuskit got the first goal for the Indians in the penultimate minute of the second period. (History created by the Indian Women’s Ice Hockey Team !)

The captain, Rinchen Dolma, then increased the lead with a smart strike in the third period. But the Philippines bounced back and scored two in double quick time to level the match up. A few minutes later they scored another to lead India 3-2.

Chuskit then stood up for the Indians as she scored not one but goals to win India the match right at the death to signal massive celebrations.

This was a watershed moment for Ice hockey in the country and this goes to prove that sport can go beyond all boundaries even in a country like India. (History created by the Indian Women’s Ice Hockey Team !)
