Kepa Replacement: The Blues are edging closer to hire the services of Rennes’ goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to bolster goalkeeping department.
Chelsea had an exceptional transfer window, with the club signing four exceptional players- Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Timo Werner, while also adding Hakim Ziyech this summer though his transfer negotiation was completed in winter.
All of this has already made the Blues cross £200million mark, but the bosses at Chelsea are ready to give even more financial backing to sign Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as Chelsea step closer to sign the Senegalese International, states the report by AP, as per the BT Sport.
Mendy had an exceptional season with Rennes, who finally managed to qualify for the Champions League this season and Chelsea is considering to hire him in order to contest Kepa Arrizabalaga
The Spanish goalkeeper in his time with Lampard has hardly managed to convince the latter. Kepa has been a subject to several errors and his reliability has massively fallen down.
This was the only department over where Chelsea hadn’t bolstered their squad. At the moment, the attack is equipped with lethal attackers, while the addition of Kai Havertz has further fortified a stacked midfield.
In defence, the hiring of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell has massively improved the most concerning area. But Chelsea desperately needed to change things.
Is Mendy surely a Kepa replacement?
As of now, nothing can be said as certain, but if Chelsea is going for a goalkeeper even after crossing the mammoth financial milestone, something probably attracted them towards Mendy.
It is a no-brainer that Ligue 1 is an inferior league to the Premier League but at the same time, Rennes is one of the most humble teams in the league and their first-ever Champions League qualification adds into the portfolio of Mendy, who was an integral part of the team.

Apart from Mendy, Andre Onana has also been linked with Chelse. Though there has been no financial detailing in the transfer pursuit of Mendy, still, it can be easily said that he will certainly cost less than Onana.
