Lionel Messi almost makes a wonder assist for Barcelona against Espanyol

Lionel Messi almost makes a crazy assist for Barcelona against Espanyol in the Barcelona derby played last night which eventually ended in a draw.

Barcelona faced city rivals Espanyol in the 19th game-week of La Liga, the Catalans were limited at a 2-2 draw by Espanyol, but the result anyway brought Barcelona on the top of the table although they lost the 2 points gap they earned.

The result could have been different if a chance created by Lionel Messi had converted. The Argentine maestro went on one of his trademark, mazy runs and fed Luis Suarez with an exquisite pass, only to see the chance missed.

Barcelona was leading 2-1 at local rivals Espanyol when Messi collected the ball inside his own half of the field. The 32-year-old beat four Espanyol defenders on his run to the edge of the opposition penalty area then took a fifth out of the game with his ball to Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker latched onto the perfect reverse pass and was left one-on-one with the goalkeeper from 12 yards out. But Suarez shot straight at Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez, meaning Messi’s hard work was all in vain.

Overall the game by Barcelona was poor, even Messi had his most underwhelming performance of this season. The laid back Blaugranas were punished by Espanyol at the last phase of the game after Wu Lei popped up in the 88th minute.

It can be asserted that Frenkie De Jong’s red card in the 75th minute opened the door for the home side, and they took advantage. Ideally, Barcelona should have won this game, considering Espanyol currently sits at the bottom of the table and have won only two games in this season.

With the loss, Barcelona fans fumed at the manager Ernesto Valverde, who has been accused of poor management of the club which is costing the club of good display of football.
