Every generation had one standout player who was above and beyond anyone else at that time. Di Stefano, Pele and Maradona are just a few era defining players that we can name over the years.

But we are living in a generation that will be remembered not for one but two players. Messi and Ronaldo have been neck and neck for the past decade even sharing the Ballon d’Or equally between them.

Their exploits on the football pitch have seen them soar past any other player in the last ten years, with their goal scoring records overshadowing some of the best players to have ever played the game.

We are certainly living in the Messi and Ronaldo era which is what this period will be remembered in football history. With the two seemingly at the last lap of this incredible battle for supremacy, it looks like both Ronaldo and Messi have accepted that there is not going to be any true winner in this race.

Both players now concentrate on doing their best for their respective clubs and countries, as Ronaldo and Messi continue to be the talisman for their sides.

Messi is also inching towards Ronaldo’s record of being the highest goal scorer in the top five European leagues. The Portugese currently sits at 370 goals, while Messi scored his 361st goal last weekend.

While Ronaldo’s goals have come in both England and Spain, Messi’s goal scoring exploits do not go past La Liga. With both of them having a little bit left in the tank, you can be sure that this record will also go down to the wire!
