Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo: Barcelona ace opens up on ‘Special Rivalry’ with former Real Madrid star in the La Liga.

Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo is an argument almost every football has participated in the last decade or so. Both stars are once in a generation talent and have legitimate claims to the title of the greatest ever. It didn’t help that both Ronaldo and Messi played for rival sides.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the biggest clubs in Spain and arguably the world. The eternal rivals face each other at least twice a season. The El Clasico played between them is a hugely awaited affair for many. However, the clash was made even more exciting with Ronaldo spearheading Real Madrid’s attack while Messi led Barcelona.

Lionel Messi confessed to feeling the same while talking to La Liga on DAZN.

“Obviously, when Cristiano was at Real Madrid, the matches were always special,” Messi said.

“The matches against Real always mean a lot, but when Cristiano was there, they became much more special.

“But it’s a time that has passed now, that we have experienced. Now, we have to look ahead to the future.”

It was a special duel

While Ronaldo has left the Spanish Giants for Juventus in the Serie A, Messi says that the special rivalry they forged will forever stay in people’s mind.

“It was a special duel and it will remain [in people’s minds] forever, because it lasted for many years and it is not easy to maintain such levels for a long time. Plus, the teams we played in were also very demanding, both Real Madrid and Barca, the two best teams in the world,” Messi said.

“Competing on an equal footing for so many years, I think it will remain [in people’s minds] forever. The sporting duel between us was very nice on a personal level and I think people had fun too, whether they were fans of Madrid or Barca, or even only football fans in general.”

We may never know the winner of the Messi vs Ronaldo argument. However, the fact that two of the most celebrated footballers in the world, spent much of the last decade engineering the successes of their club while regularly playing against each other and displaying never before seen brillince, much to the delight of the fans around the world, suggests that perhaps it is the game in the end, that came out the victor.
