Lionel Messi WhatsApp message to Neymar after 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the UCL revealed

Lionel Messi WhatsApp message to Neymar after 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the UCL revealed. The loss to the Reds was the lowest point of Messi’s season last campaign.

Barcelona were on course for a record 3rd treble. The league had been long conquered. A place in the Copa Del Ray final was booked. They had already won their first leg of the Semi-Final vs Liverpool 3-0. If Barcelona would have scored once at the Anfield, Liverpool would have to score 5 times to win. In the Barcelona saw Liverpool find the net 4 times while they failed to score even once.

Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League and just like that their dream season turned into a nightmare. The champions league had slipped from under their feet once again and all Lionel Messi and the rest of the Barcelona team and supporters could do was stare in shock and horror.

Their entire season derailed from that point onwards. They would go on to lose the Copa Del Ray final too. After coming so close to the Treble, a League win was now less than satisfactory. Change was needed and it seemed that the players, mostly Lionel Messi, was convinced that the answer to their problems was none other than Neymar.

All through the summer it was reported that Barcelona were in the hunt for their former player Neymar. The Brazilian was also reported to desire a return to Camp Nou. However, his desire perhaps dwarfs in comparison to Messi’s own desperation to see Neymar back in a Barcelona jersey.

France Football, the same organisation that hands out the Ballon d’Or, have sensationally reported that after the defeat to Liverpool, Messi sent Neymar the following WhatsApp message:

“Only together can we win the Champions League.”

“I want you to come back. In two years, I’m leaving, and you’ll be alone, you’ll take my place.”

Messi to leave Barcelona by 2020/21

If true, there are two things we can take from this. One, Lionel Messi genuinely cares about Barcelona and what happens to the club after he departs. 2nd, Messi does not see himself playing at Barcelona after 2 years. That would mean that the 2020/21 season would be the last time he turns out for Barcelona; just before the next World Cup.

Interestingly, his current contract runs till the 2020/21 season. Former Barcelona player and Sporting Director Eric Abidal previously said that the club was working towards a contract extension for Lionel Messi and that was the club’s most important task at hand at the moment.

“He [Messi] is a key player for us,” Abidal told Sport. “And has the option of leaving at the end of his current deal.

“But I know the president is talking to his representatives to ensure the contract is closed once and for all.

“I hope he stays for many years, and I think that will be the case. It will be Leo’s decision. And as he says, Barcelona first and foremost. He is the best.”

From the text that Messi has reportedly sent to Neymar, it appears as if he has already made his mind though. Barcelona fans will hope that this is nothing but rumours. In the off chance that Messi actually decides to hang his boots or leave the La Liga to play back in Argentina or the MLS, it will be a sad day for football fans around the world regardless of what club or players they support.
