Man City transfer news: Pep Guardiola targets Leicester City defender as Vincent Kompany’s replacement after the latter announced his departure.
Vincent Kompany yesterday announced his departure from the club, in order to serve his boyhood club Anderlecht. This has caused defensive concerns for Pep Guardiola, hence, he reportedly wishes to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.
Departure of Kompany created a void in the Citizens defense as his deputies, Ayermic Laporte and John Stones are the only options available with Nicolas Otamendi ageing and failing to feature in the first team.
Moreover, Laporte and Stones have shown signs of vulnerability this season, thus, Manchester City require a defender who can command from the back like Kompany.
Therefore, According to a report by Daily Mail, Pep Guardiola sees those attributes in the English International and wants to hijack him from the Foxes this summer.
It is believed that Maguire impressed the Spanish coach after Manchester City’s 1-0 against Leicester City, it is further reported that Guardiola lavished him with praises over his performance.
However, Leicester City is not interested to sell Maguire, who recently signed a 5-year contract with the club in September following an impressive World Cup.
Additionally, Brendan Rodgers highly rate the 26-year-old defender and wants him to remain at the club for next season. However, he is aware of the interests for the player and is prepared to deal with all, as he said.
‘All you can do is present possibilities, I have had situations before with players who have been linked with going to bigger clubs and you try to give an honest appraisal of it.
‘I will speak to a player like I would speak to my son. I would give them the possibilities of staying and what it might look like being away. Then they are men and they have to make their own decision.’ he further said.
Although, on the brighter side, Manchester City can still secure the deal but would be expected to cross the £75 million price Liverpool paid for Virgil Van Dijk, given Maguire’s age and nationality.
The internal talks between the two clubs are yet to be done but Manchester city need to be prepared for the expected demands of the Foxes.
