3) Chelsea won the midfield battle, but Lampard needs to tweak his tactics
Chelsea’s midfield of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic fared well throughout the game. During the last twenty minutes, they were mentally drained and failed to prevent two goals which do not come from their mistake.
At the other end, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba were overplaying and gave cheap possessions away in dangerous positions.
When one of Jorginho or Mateo Kovacic joins the attack, one midfielder must trackback to cut down the defensive overload. Those two got dragged at the same time – assisting the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, and Paul Pogba to exploit the gap with their breakneck pace.
Despite their slick passing, Lampard’s tactics have played a huge role in getting the defense exposed. The return of N’Golo Kante will be a huge boost for the Blues, but there should be a reshuffle of strategy.
