Mats Hummels: Bayern Munich defender rejoins Borussia Dortmund

Mats Hummels will pair up with Lucien Favre at Borussia Dortmund in the pre-season.

Mats Hummels’ three-year stint at Bayern Munich has culminated and will return to his former club Borussia Dortmund. The Germain International will complete the medical and now pair up with Lucien Favre, whose side missed out on the title agonisingly.

The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €38 million. He is joining Borussia Dortmund for the second time, after Jurgen Klopp snapped him up in January 2008.

The club statement read the following:

“Mats Hummels (30) is facing a return to Borussia Dortmund. On Wednesday FC Bayern and BVB reached a fundamental agreement on a change of the central defender, who played for Dortmund from 2008 to 2016. Both parties have agreed to keep the transfer modalities confidential. To complete the transfer, Hummels now has to complete the medical check in Dortmund.”

During his stint with the Bavarians, Hummels made 116 appearances and steered his side to the Bundesliga thrice and DFB-Pokal once. The 30-year-old was fundamental in Dortmund’s success under Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

The centre-back was a fan favourite at Signal Iduna Park – where he lifted the league title twice and DFB-Pokal twice. However, those treasured moments were brought to an end when he exited the club in a controversial manner three years ago.

This is an extraordinary addition despite Hummels’ injury record over the last few years. Niko Kovac was open to listening to offers for Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng after snapping up Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.

Mats Hummels follows Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt, and Niko Schulz to Signal Iduna Park as Lucien Favre strengthens his side.

What’s next?

Mats Hummels has lost some pace, but he would fit Lucien Favre’s demands as he is dominant with the ball. He is one of the best ball-playing centre-halves and can neglect the errors in the backline with his experience.
