McLaren sign Sainz as replacement for Alonso. The Renault driver has signed a multi year deal. His driving partner is yet to be announced

Fernando Alonso’s retirement had left a vacant spot at McLaren and Carlos Sainz has been announced as the replacement, thereby ending his contract with Red Bull.

Sainz has signed a multi-year deal with McLaren, one that should keep him at the team for the foreseeable future.

Sainz was bound by his contract with Red Bull up until 30th of this month, but it seems like Red Bull and McLaren have worked out an arrangement.

“We’re incredibly excited to have Carlos join us as a McLaren driver. We’ve been assessing him for some time now and rate him very highly among the next generation of young talent emerging through the ranks in Formula 1.

“Carlos brings with him the perfect blend of youth and experience. Although he’s just 23, he’ll be starting his fifth season in the sport with us and will bring with him a huge amount of racing experience, both in Formula 1 and with our partner Renault.

“It’s no secret that Carlos is a huge admirer of Fernando’s, and it’s fitting that he will be stepping into his seat as a Spaniard with a legendary name in motorsport. We think he’ll be a great fit for McLaren and we’re really excited to have him join us from next season and beyond.” Zak Brown said.

We’ll have to wait and see who races along with Sainz from next season onwards, as Vandoorne’s performances have been way off this year. However, there were issues with his car in the first half of the season and maybe he could put up better performances after the summer break.

Lando Norris is also in line for a possible move to McLaren, and a final decision is awaited.
