When we go through the annals of Indian cricket, the likes of Vijay Merchant, Tiger Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar will always be remembered as some of the best batsmen that our country ever produced.

But we some how miss out on one batting wizard, who in his prime was considered as one of the greatest players of his time. As fate would have it, Mohammad Azahruddin’s name in the history books of Indian cricket will always have an asterix attached to it.

Azhar exploded on to the international stage with three hundreds in his opening three matches, with one of them being a double hundred. The wristy genius from Hyderabad had a brilliant career, until of course it ended in a mess after he was allegedly involved in a match fixing scandal at the turn of the century.

Once the darling of the nation, Azhar now lives a life that some might say he does not deserve. During his time as skipper, Azhar gave chances to several Indian talents such as Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman, Srinath, Kumble and Prasad to name a few.

Now, Azhar feels that Dhoni should consider stepping away from the game as well, although he deserves the chance to do it on his own terms.

“It’s Ganguly’s personal decision (opinion) and I respect it. At the same time it all depends on Dhoni, on what he thinks about his future. I respect Ganguly’s opinion, but I feel Dhoni should be given the chance to decide when to retire,” said Azhar on the sidelines of a function to announce the joining of racer Nayan Chatterjee with Meco Motor Sports.
