"More power to you, Naomi Osaka": Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard among many other NBA stars support the tennis prodigy as she withdraws from the French Open amid mental health struggles

Several NBA stars including Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard support Naomi Osaka as she withdraws from the French Open amid her mental health struggles.

Tennis star Naomi Osaka made headlines this past week when she announced that she wouldn’t be fulfilling her media obligations during the French Open. The organisation decided to fine the four-time Grand Slam winner $15,000 for the same.

On Monday night, the 23-year-old announced her withdrawal from the Roland Garros. In a Twitter post, the “introverted” Osaka reasoned that her mental health was her topmost priority and didn’t want to participate in any tennis tournament as a distraction.

Following her announcement, several fellow athletes showered Osaka with love and support. NBA stars including Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Portland’s Damian Lillard and Memphis’ Ja Morant, too came in her defence.

Following the whole incident, Dane Dolla blasted all the people who were criticising the tennis star for her decision. Lillard also pointed out the difficulties of being a well-recognised athlete. The Trail Blazers guard said:

“I think it’s a shame that there are people out there that don’t respect and support it. I think in this era, this age of being a professional athlete, we deal with things. Things that a lot of people who came before us didn’t have to deal with. As far as the access that fans and people who aren’t even fans that just know who you are have to you.”

“Whether it’s Twitter or Instagram or whatever, Facebook. Because of social media, people are allowed to comment and have opinions and down talk and disrespect. On a level that they weren’t allowed to before.”
