20 Years Before Watching Stephen Curry Lift Finals MVP Trophy, Dell Curry Couldn’t Bear to Watch Chef’s 63-Point Onslaught

There hasn’t quite ever been a player with the shooting capabilities that Stephen Curry possesses. Comprehensively the best shooter the league has ever seen, the Golden State Warriors ace is capable of changing the course of matches at will. Curry’s ability to go hot during games and win matches for his teams has always been apparent, even as a middle schooler. According to Sports Illustrated, Curry once scored a whopping 63 points as an eighth-grader for a team called 5-0. The situation was so dire that his father, Dell Curry, could not bear to watch what he “was doing to those kids.”

Dell has been an avid supporter of his son and was in attendance when he lifted his first Finals MVP trophy in 2022. However, he could still not bear to watch his son score the final 20 of his 63-point haul all those years ago.

Dell Curry could once not bear to see his son destroy a middle school team

Stephen Curry’s shooting abilities are like a cheat code. Along with his ball-handling and passing skills, Curry is easily one of the toughest players to guard against despite his small size and stature.

His father Dell Curry was also an able shooter and finished his career as the Charlotte Hornets’ highest-ever scorer. Dell attended the 2022 NBA Finals when Steph won the Finals MVP and has attended a range of his most dominant games.

However, years ago, his father could not bear to see what he once did against a middle school team. Playing for a travel team called 5-0, Steph ended up scoring 63 points.

Dell watched the majority of the performance but could not bear to watch the final 20 points. Steph later explained that he “shot everywhere, and couldn’t miss.”:

“All these people were coming in to see what was going on, and there was so much commotion, it seemed like he was never going to stop. I had to get out of there. I felt bad for the other team. I couldn’t watch what he was doing to those kids.”

Despite years of showcasing his exemplary skills, Curry has never been able to match the 63 points he casually scored in middle school. Curry has over the years turned up with some intriguing displays, and habitually scores off shots that are pretty much impossible for any other player.

In his decorated career, Curry has crossed the 40-point mark a whopping 62 times in the NBA. However, he is yet to score more than 62, which came in January 2021 against a hapless Portland Trail Blazers.

That day, Curry also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists to go along with his 62 points. He went 8-16 from the 3-point line, and his overall efficiency was 58.1%. That is the lowest among his top-10 highest-scoring performances to date.
