Stephen Curry has been enjoying himself this off-season. As Shaquille O’Neal would say it, the Golden State Warriors star is off, doing “side missions” this summer. One of these side missions happened to be for Complex. He was seen in a YouTube video going sneaker-shopping with Joe La Puma. While talking about his love for shoes, the Baby-Faced Assassin revealed an interesting fact. He used to wear size 14 shoes until his rookie year before realizing they were too big for him.

The four-time NBA Champion has always been infatuated by sneakers. Growing up, he dreamed about having his own line of shoes. When he finally entered the league, he achieved that dream. The Curry line of shoes by Under Armour has been wildly successful.
And, as years go by, he hopes to emulate Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand. However, it’s a great example of just how far he’s come. From wearing anything he could to having his own line, and from wearing size 14s to finally wearing shoes that fit.
Stephen Curry reveals he once wore shoes that were way too big for him
Back when he was still a kid, Stephen Curry enjoyed watching his father, Dell Curry, play in the NBA. He was in awe of his father’s skill and wanted to be just like him. So much so, that he even tried fitting into his dad’s shoes, literally. Growing up, he wore his father’s size 14s and did the same from high school to college, all the way until his rookie season in the NBA.
As he explained to Joe La Puma, he tricked himself into believing he was a size 14. However, it was not until preseason, before his rookie year, that he realized otherwise. Seeing how the toe box folded over itself, Steph realized his shoes were too big. Ever since then, he’s been wearing the right-sized shoes.
The answer, as expected, left La Puma stunned. He asked Curry how it didn’t have any effect on his game. To this, the Warriors star replied that he was strong and that the size difference didn’t bother him in high school. The same went for when he played at Davidson, where he had an incredible NCAA tournament run. But, he couldn’t help but wonder if he would have scored more points if he had worn the right size.
Steph: “I was a 12 and a half the whole time…from high school onward. But, yeah I was rocking 14s. From Charlotte Christian all the way to Davidson, all the way to my rookie year in the league and then kinda came back to where I am right now.”
Joe La Puma: “And, it didn’t have any effect?”
Steph: “Nah…I mean I was flipping and flopping around for a while as I got stronger. But, yeah…it didn’t have really effect because I had a crazy college career, tournament run and all that. But, we were rocking 14s! I could have had 10 more points a game or something if I had actual shoes!”
It is fun imagining just what Steph’s draft stock would have been if he had a more prolific college career and the right-sized shoes. But, the past is in the past, and Curry has made a great name for himself. Once his career in the NBA is done, he will go down as one of the greatest of all time.
Steph was a dominant force during his run in the NCAA with the Davidson Wildcats
He may have been wearing big shoes, but Stephen Curry lived up to the billing in college. Playing for the Davidson Wildcats, Steph balled out leading his team to the Regional Finals in the 2007-08 season. Spending three years there, he averaged 25 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
In 2009, he finally declared for the NBA Draft. Having played three years in college, his draft stock wasn’t as high as expected. Nevertheless, he was drafted seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors. Four NBA Championships, two MVPs, and a plethora of All-NBA and All-Star team selections later, he is now one of the best players in the game.
