Charles Barkley has always believed that big men should play their natural role on court – playing near the hoop rather than away.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that he’s been disparaging of stretch big men. Both Shaq and Chuck strictly advocate the likes of Giannis and Embiid to dominate the paint region rather than shoot jumpers.
Barkley had a great interview with Bill Simmons on his recent podcast appearance. Chuck talked about how Moses Malone motivated him to reduce his weight by 50 pounds, enabling him to play more minutes.
According to Charles Barkley, he used to live in the same building as Moses as a rookie. Malone, who’d won back-to-back MVPs in Chuck’s college years, instructed him to ‘stop being fat and lazy’. Barkley heeded that advice, paving his way into a Hall of Fame career.
Charles Barkley on shooting big men in the league today
Citing the case of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Barkley explained that an elite team needs its big man in the paint. Barkley wants the likes of Karl-Anthony Towns to impose their on-court presence with size and physicality.
Towns has often been criticized for being ‘too soft’ for a big man. Many thought that the former Kentucky center was only good enough to play as a stretch forward. But Towns has evolved into an almost complete offensive player as a big man.

In criticizing Towns for moving away from the cup, Chuck forgot one thing – KAT is great in the paint too. Indeed, if Towns is able to play with D’Angelo Russell for a good time like in college, there’s a great chance that he’ll become an elite roll man too.
He has already mastered the face-up game and the post-up game. Towns’ and the Wolves’ major weakness is defending the paint. His defensive instincts are all over the place, and that’s what’s holding the Wolves back.
