In 1997, Michael Jordan, His Wife Juanita Vanoy, and 3 Children Were Holed up in His Hotel Suite in Paris Due to Stifling Crowds Ahead of Game vs PSG

The Chicago Bulls landed the greatest player in the history of basketball back in 1984. Michael Jordan was selected as the third pick in the draft. Success would fuel him and make him a global name. Including in the faraway land of Paris, France.

MJ’s meteoric rise to worldwide stardom has been well documented. To say the man is an icon would be an understatement.

However, before he reached the peak of his fame, there was still one place where His Airness could walk around freely. The city of Paris. It was one of his favorite places in the world. While it does still hold his favor, the same unfortunately cannot be said of his anonymity there.

Michael Jordan was once holed up in a hotel room in Paris with his wife and kids unable to leave because of the crowds

At one point in time, Paris was a safe haven for Michael Jordan. It was a place he frequently visited ever since he was drafted in 1984. A place where he could walk around unrecognized and unbothered.

However, in the years that followed as MJ’s fame grew, so did his global recognition. As a result, Paris was a safe haven no more. To the point where Jordan was incapable of even leaving his hotel room, where he was forced to hole up with his wife, Juanita Vanoy, and his 3 children in 1997.

All due to the raging crowds waiting to catch a glimpse of L’Idole ahead of the Chicago Bulls game against PSG in the McDonald’s Championship.

On this day in 1997, the Bulls participated in and won the McDonald’s Championship in Paris, France. They defeated PSG Racing, 89-82, on 10/17/97 and Olympiakos, 104-78, on 10/18/97. pic.twitter.com/E5amhLOxuq

A sad end to the peace and quiet that His Airness once enjoyed in the City of Light. But an end that led to several lucrative business opportunities.

MJ’s Air Jordan brand is now one of the official sponsors of Paris Saint-Germain

From playing against their basketball team in 1997 to now seeing his infamous Jumpman logo on their jerseys. Michael Jordan has a wonderful relationship not just with the city of Paris, but also with their local club as well. Air Jordan became an official sponsor of the PSG football club in 2018. A partnership that is quite a lucrative one.

It may not be the place it once was for Jordan. But, it is safe to say that hasn’t stopped him from saying, Paris mon amour.
