The NBA Draft commenced on October 18th and resulted in quite a few surprises along the way. Prospects such as Patrick Williams were taken much higher than anticipated and others like Tyrell Terry weren’t even taken in the 1st round.
The Lakers claimed the number 1 seed in the West last season so their draft odds weren’t going to be as good as they were in the 2019 Draft. They landed the 28th pick in this year’s draft.
The did not look to trade this pick in a package for a player around the league. Instead, they decided to draft Washington’s Jaden McDaniels.
Jaden McDaniels will become a Los Angeles Laker.
Jaden McDaniels was projected to be selected a couple picks outside of the lottery. The 18th pick was what was expected of McDaniels. However, he fell all the way down to the 28th pick, in the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers.
It is unknown whether or not the Lakers will trade Jaden away in pursuit of an established star around the league. At the moment, it seems as though the front office will like to keep him for the future.
What are Jaden McDaniels’ strengths and weaknesses?
The Washington freshman boasts a 7’0 wingspan. He has very guard-like abilities, in the way he can glide around the court. He has a refined pull up jumper, along with great transition offense.
The Lakers could benefit from having a player like McDaniels. However, he isn’t the greatest when trying to blow past defenders in an iso. He is also afraid of initiating contact while driving to the rim.
Per 36 minutes, he averaged 15 ppg with a true shooting percentage of 52%.
