The Boston Celtics have reached a point in their roster construction where having Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown isn’t enough. Marcus Smart, a man considered to be the heart and soul of the team, has been traded away from the squad that drafted him 6th overall in 2014 and signed him to a 4 year extension worth $77,000,000 in 2022. The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired the former Defensive Player of the Year in a 3-team trade but what Reddit seems to be more intrigued about is Smart’s current sleep cycle in regards to the timing of this trade.

Smart and the Celtics have been intertwined for close to a decade now. Smart has seen various modern day iterations of the team with Isaiah Thomas coming and going, the Kyrie Irving 2 year ‘rental’, and now the Tatum-Brown era. Through it all, he’s embraced a role not many would fancy having and after all this time invested in one team, he’s been traded.
Marcus Smart may be sleeping right now
A redditor who goes by ‘u/__john_cena__’ took to the platform to put forth a theory revolving around whether or not Marcus Smart even knows about this trade that involves him or not. “Marcus Smart could be asleep and would wake up to being traded,” is the notion that’s being set forth here given that the 3-team trade went down at midnight.

The reasoning behind this is because Smart has always been a huge advocate for getting an optimal amount of rest and sleep throughout the night. “As a professional athlete, sleep is a vital part of my daily routine,” said Marcus.
During the NBA Finals series between the Celtics and the Warriors last year, Marcus would harp on the importance of sleep yet again, saying, “Getting sleep in this series is huge man. So for me, it’s about being able to rest and a good night’s sleep. My conditioning is there with these guys but you have to be fresh for them,” told the former Celtics guard to Chris Haynes.
Of course, it also makes complete sense if anybody who is close to Marcus immediately woke him up to tell him the news. After all, this is going to be a big change for him because living in Boston is all he’s known since getting drafted 9 years ago.
Is Kristaps Porzingis a good fit for the Celtics?
Yes, having a big-man who can respectably space the floor on offense and protect the rim while also guarding the pick ‘n’ roll well on defense is an asset any team would like to have. Blitz off PnRs have been a problem for the Celtics to handle and to have KP shading on defense would be quite a lot more help.
The major concern is his health as he played 65+ games this past season for the first time since the 2016-17 season. If Kristaps can remain healthy then perhaps trading away Marcus Smart will not go in vain.
