Charles Barkley admits that he was scared of letting Coach K find out that he had given his daughter alcohol when with the Dream Team.
The formation of the 1992 Dream Team was a historic moment for USA basketball. Prior to 1992, professional basketball players such as NBA pros could not participate in the Olympics and thus, could not represent the US.
This all changed in that year and so legends such as Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson all banded together to form the now iconic, ‘Dream Team’.
After losing two exhibition games, the Dream Team went undefeated and waltzed their way to a gold medal. It was expected that with talent like Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan on the same team, Team USA would cruise to win gold. However, it is a testament to them putting their ego aside and playing as a unit when they are all accustomed to ‘being the man’ in the NBA.
Usual hotheads like Barkley seemed to simmer down that one fateful summer. Perhaps his nonchalant behavior when with his NBA friends is what led to a potential confrontation with Coach K.
Charles Barkley gave Coach K’s daughter alcohol and tried to avoid coach all morning.
Being in and around the NBA for nearly 40 years, guys like Charles Barkley are bound to have hilarious stories from back in the day. On a recent episode of the Steam Room, Chuck let Mike Krzyzewski know that he inadvertently gave his daughter a boatload of alcohol one night.
The above story by Barkley was later confirmed by Coach K as he admitted to noticing his daughter might’ve drank some alcohol the night prior.
Props to him however as he approached ‘Sir Charles’ in the morning after that night and told him that it’s ok and that it was his daughter’s fault, not his.
It’s safe to say that Charles Barkley just has a bevy of amusing stories like this locked up in his mind and his waiting for the right moment to blurt them out.
