Renowned Shooting Coach Reveals Jaylen Brown Gave “Ideas to Help” His Family and Became His Close Friend
There’s so much more to NBA stars than people usually give them credit for. Take Jaylen Brown’s friendship with Chris Matthews for example. Matthews, better known as Lethal Shooter, has been Brown’s longtime workout partner. He helped the Celtics star be game-ready for the 2024-25 season, the results of which we are seeing in the NBA.
While speaking to Andscape, Matthews talked about all the things he has learned from being around the Celtics forward. He also detailed how kind Brown is as a person, despite being one of the biggest superstars in the game.
“Jaylen is a well-rounded young man. It’s not just about basketball with him. Me as a trainer, he elevated my mind,” Matthews said.
Brown cares for the people he surrounds himself with. Even with a busy schedule and his own personal things to deal with, he would always find time to ask Matthews if he had checked up on his wife and kids.
Matthews is also fond of the business acumen that Brown possesses and how he isn’t hesitant to share it with others. He said, “He’s also not self-centered. He was about empowering me and my brand. Putting me in position to win…He’s an NBA player helping me with ideas to help my family. He helped me as a person.”
After seeing the kind nature from being around the superstar, Matthews has developed great respect and admiration for JB. He now considers Brown one of his best friends.
The four-time NBA All-Star has won him over for life by simply being kind, generous, and caring. It’s a rare quality to have in a star of Brown’s stature. Stories like this are hard to come by because those who truly care for others don’t do it for publicity.
Matthews celebrated Jaylen Brown’s championship win last year
When the Celtics broke their 16-year-long championship drought in 2024, millions around the world celebrated it. No one was quite as happy as Matthews for the Celtics’ 18th title as he played a role in it.
Lethal Shooter had worked with Brown for two years at that point and was partly responsible for his championship-winning performance. Along with the ring, Brown also won the Finals MVP title.
Matthews shared several clips and pictures from their workouts on Instagram and wrote, “BIG CONGRATS to Jaylen Brown! Thank you for trusting me for the last two years.” The veteran trainer took pride in the fact that he has trained 12 NBA Champions over half a decade.

“It’s been incredible watching you work for this title and seeing that grind pay off. The energy has shifted,” he added.
