Stephen Curry Shooting from the Moon: What Is the Reason Behind This Meme?

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) reacts after hitting a three-point shot against the Dallas Mavericks during the third quarter at Chase Center.

NBA GOATs are probably destined to be part of popular memes for the entertainment of the general public. Along with the Michael Jordan crying meme and scores of LeBron James memes, the NBA world is also used to a lot of Stephen Curry memes.

The four-time NBA champion has built a legacy that will undoubtedly make its way to the Basketball Hall of Fame. But if it were up to fans, the iconic meme of Curry letting it fly from the moon would be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial along with his jersey.

The image of Steph shooting a shot from the moon may be an old one at this point, but it certainly encapsulates the cultural impact of the Baby-Faced Assassin. The image was made at a time when Curry would routinely pull up from half-court, performing miracles on a daily basis on the NBA hardwood.

It was hitherto unimaginable for a professional player to extend his scoring abilities to that distance. Fans had never witnessed that kind of confidence from that kind of range before and it only made sense to joke that no distance could stop Curry from finding the bottom of the net. Except, perhaps, if he shot from the moon.

Therefore, the meme in question typically comes up when a ludicrous notion is brought up. For example, if you asked any NBA fan last year if Luka Doncic was going to become a Laker, they would probably send you this image of Steph shooting from the moon. Because it felt as unlikely as Curry missing a shot from deep.

Of course, years have passed since this meme was created, but it’s important to look back — especially when there are new jokes coming to the fore.

Earlier this month, SLAM Magazine featured the Chef as their cover athlete. During the rollout, they released a new image of the two-time MVP, one that left his sister in splits.

On her podcast with Cameron Brink, Sydel Curry-Lee talked about Curry’s awkward pose on SLAM cover photo. “The first time I saw this picture, I was just scrolling like I normally do on Instagram. It comes up, and I literally start laughing!

Why’s he standing like that?” Sydel questioned. Cam Brink shared who Steph reminded her of in this image. “He looks like Canon in this! That’s how Canon stands. The chill guy,” the LA Sparks forward added.

Well, it’s 2025 and a 36-year-old Stephen Curry is still serving up memes to the fanbase. Perhaps he is just a chill guy after all.
