Each and every NBA team has their own regiment of fans. Some franchises have a bigger fan base than the others, depending upon the city, popular players and accolades.
Over the years, we have witnessed organisations like the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls among many more, have the loudest fans. However, there is one particular fan base, which even analyst Kendrick Perkins believes to have the best playoff atmosphere and not just in basketball, rather, in all of sport – the New York Knicks.
The tough NY crowd is easily one of the most passionate and vocal fans in the entire association. Even though the Knicks don’t really have the same legacy of winning as teams like LAL or BOS, thanks to the Mecca of Basketball – Madison Square Garden, the city of New York has a strong history in the league.

Kendrick Perkins speaks about the electrifying atmosphere in the Hawks-Knicks series at the MSG
In the 2021 playoffs, there were several close encounters. However, no playoffs series could have been as exciting and drama-filled as the Atlanta Hawks-New York Knicks series.
As soon as Trae Young and co. set foot in the MSG, the crowd being the loud-mouthed fans they were, immediately started abusing and even spitting on Trae. Even though things went out of hand sometimes, no one can deny the attachment and loyalty the supporters have for their team.
Recently, on a segment of ESPN’s “First Take“, host Molly Qerim asked Perkins:
“We saw fans going nuts in the deer district in Milwaukee. Who has the best playoff atmosphere in all of sports?”
To which Perk answered:
“You know what, I gotta go with the New York Knicks. Let’s not forget what we witnessed in the first round (of the playoffs). Let’s not forget that atmosphere in Madison Square Garden when Ice Trae had to silence the crowd.”
“It might not have been 60,000 (fans), it probably was 20,000 that was outside the arena. Madison Square Garden was rocking. It’s great for basketball in general. We heard guys like LeBron James speak on it. We heard guys around the NBA speak on the same that it is great to have New York basketball, the Knicks basketball back. And this is why.”
MSG and NYC is still the biggest stage in sports. It’s Broadway meets the most invested fan base of them all! Atmosphere is 2nd to NONE. Carry on… https://t.co/Tl6457GCRF
