“The way Luka Doncic and I approach basketball is similar”: Cade Cunningham lavished praise on the Mavericks superstar on JJ Redick’s podcast ahead of 2021 NBA Draft
Cade Cunningham has been compared to Luka Doncic by many analysts ahead of the 2021 NBA Draft. The incoming rookie addresses these comparisons.
Luka Doncic has grabbed the attention of every NBA fan over the past 3 years. We’ve all been on the lookout for the next superstar after LeBron James retires from basketball.
Giannis Antetokounmpo won the NBA championship this year and Kawhi Leonard was the Finals MVP 2 years ago. But these 2 guys, along with Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, belong technically to an older ‘generation’, so to speak.
Luka Doncic seems to be the best young player on the planet. Having earned 2 straight All-NBA First Team selections as a guard, it is hard to argue against his case as a top 5 player in the world already.
Cade Cunningham would be hard-pressed to follow the lead of the Slovenian prodigy.
“The way we approach the game is similar”: Cade Cunningham on Luka Doncic comparisons
Cade Cunningham was on JJ Redick’s ‘Old Man and the Three’ podcast a few weeks back. The duo delved into the NBA draft process in great depth through the course of the interview.
Naturally, the question regarding Cunningham’s best draft comparison came up. Luka’s name was mentioned, and Cade dove into it with great enthusiasm:
“I said Luka Doncic a bunch earlier because I feel like our body types resemble each other the most. As far as I look like in the NBA, you know. His role as well, he’s the primary ballhandler, he’s the one making a play. So that’s why I said Luka.”
“But I mean it’s weird now because me and Luka are so close in age and I’ve never just been the type of guy to be like ‘Yeah, that’s the guy I’m like’ – you know what I’m saying?”
“So now I feel like it’s kind of got blown out of proportion into something that I want to be. Because soon I’ll be playing against Luka and I ain’t about to let him say it.”
“But his game, he’s shooting the deep 3s, so I feel like there’s a lot of things we do that are pretty similar. And the way we approach the game is pretty similar. So yeah, he’s big-time, sure!”
