This would be the Serbian’s third stint with the Portugese manager- in Benfica, Chelsea and now Manchester United.

He has been a subject of speculation this summer, having fallen behind the new signing N’golo Kante at Chelsea. Manchester United have been in pursuit of the Serbian, looking for a holding midfielder and for someone who can be solid at the back.

The player has now been spotted in a United jersey. Although the transfer is yet to be confirmed by either of the clubs, all doubts have vanished from the minds of the fans. The estimated fee of the transfer is around €40m.

Signed for €27m during winter 2014, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best ball playing defensive midfielders in the Premier League. He played an instrumental role in Chelsea’s campaigns there onwards.

In a rejuvenated Matic, Jose would be acquiring a player with the mentality and experience he craves. The 28-year-old is not the most vocal presence on the pitch but he is a commanding character who exudes authority.

With Michael Carrick nearing the end of his playing years, and Paul Pogba and Ander Hererra playing at tgeir best as attacking midfielders, this could easily be one of the best buys of the season if the combination performs as well as it looks good on paper.

Matic will also provide much needed solidarity in front of the defence, which hasn’t looked particularly impressive the last few seasons for United. With Lindelof in as well, the Red Devils look to have sealed the holes at the back.

“But at the same time, he is not the kind of guy to play square passes. He can keep possession, but he can see the movement forward, passing into space.”, Mourinho once quoted.

As Manchester United prepare to battle for the big prizes in the season ahead, the two-time title-winning midfielder could be exactly what they need.
