Justin Fields, the talented quarterback for the Chicago Bears, has come a long way since signing his massive $18.8 million rookie deal. However, before the Ohio State alum transitioned to the big league and secured his bag, his final step was as anxious as one could imagine, which Fields recently talked about during an exclusive interview with ‘The Q with Quincy Avery.’

During the interview, Justin Fields recalled that his draft day experience was full of anxiety, hopelessness, and finally, ecstasy. Fields admitted that he knew about not getting picked in the top three.
With Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson already locked in, and the 49ers confirming they were picking Trey Lance at third, Fields felt the Falcons would select him at four. But fate had other plans.
“Before the draft, I’m thinking, okay, Falcons might take me, we’ll see. Boom, number four pick comes around. They choose my boy, Kyle Pitts,” Fields recounted.
Fields’ chances of getting picked slowly dwindled as the draft progressed, further diminishing his confidence. By the time the Broncos and Eagles made their selections with the 9th and 10th picks, Fields no longer had any idea where he was headed. But the Bears, in dire need of a QB, ended the suspense.
The Chicago Bears traded up to rope him in, and it was his agent who informed him of the news beforehand. Fields candidly admitted in the video, “I got the phone call before I even saw the TV.”
In his first two years, the former Buckeyes QB has already shown splashes of brilliance. He hasn’t quite grown into a franchise quarterback yet, but many believe that with the right love and care, he can lead the Bears to great heights.
Justin Fields Can Make or Break Things in Chicago
Fields’ rookie contract, worth $18.8 million, reflects the Bears’ belief in his potential. This contract signifies the immense responsibility and expectations placed upon him to lead the team to success. Moreover, he has shown extreme potential in the last two seasons — finishing his rookie year with 1870 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, 2 scores on the ground, and 420 rushing yards.
However, in his second season, Justin took it up a notch and became the only third signal-caller to record 1,000 rushing yards after Lamar Jackson and Michael Vick. On top of that, he tallied 8 rushing touchdowns and 17 passing scores.
Yet, the Bears still concluded the season with a disastrous 3-14 record. That’s where Fields will have his biggest test in the 2023 season. Along with churning out good individual numbers, he would have to lead his side to wins as well.
