Peyton Manning, who is often regarded as one of the finest quarterbacks to ever play the great game, is also known for his incredible sense of humor. He was such a massive entity in the football world from the get go, that even a decade before he won his first Super Bowl ring, he got an invite from the King of Late Night Shows, David Letterman. While David would have thought Mr. Manning was a benign young gentlemen who might hesitate in front of the cameras, little did he know that the signal-caller was ready to showcase his non-QB talents as well.

After ruling the roost at the University of Tennessee, Peyton had entered the NFL draft back in 1998, where he was roped in as the first overall by the Indianapolis Colts. However, around four months before he donned the Colts jersey, Manning had a chat with David Letterman on his show and what transpired during the episode, is what the two veterans of their respective fields haven’t forgotten even today.
Peyton Manning’s sense of humor once left David Letterman incredibly impressed
Not long ago, Peyton and Letterman sat down for a segment on ‘Peyton’s Places,’ where the two stars ended up reminiscing their first interaction which they had well over two decades ago. Actually, in that 1997 interview, David had asked Peyton about staying in Tennessee for his senior year to which, the legendary QB had responded by saying:
“It was such a rush my first three years, so I wanted to slow things down, come back, and enjoy my senior year, just like your great senior year at Ball State.” To this, David responded, “that’s right. I could have turned pro, but I went back to finish up my college before I broke into broadcasting.”
Impressed by Manning’s timing and the ease with which he had delivered the lines, Letterman had then claimed, “the kid’s got writers!” Remembering this old interaction, when David met Peyton a few months ago, he admitted that he was left utterly impressed with the QB’s joke. “That was a very strong joke,” Letterman had said.

What makes the 1997 interview even more impressive is that Manning hadn’t even started at the highest level by that time. In fact, he won his first ever Super Bowl for the Colts in 2007, a decade after the famous interview. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Manning gave a fair indication of what he plans to do post retirement, even before starting with his QB duties.
