“I Thought Patrick Mahomes Was Trash”: Tyreek Hill Hated The Kansas City Chiefs 2017 NFL Draft Pick Perhaps Indicating He’d Want Deshaun Watson Or Mitchell Trubisky

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes has quickly become perhaps the best quarterback in the NFL, but Tyreek Hill didn’t think that would happen when the Chiefs picked him.

Mahome and Hill have formed one of the most dominant QB-WR duos in the league as Mahomes’ rocket arm pairs well with Hill’s electric speed. Along with Travis Kelce, both of them have helped give the Kansas City Chiefs one of the most explosive offenses in the league.

The funny thing about it all is that Mahomes didn’t even play for most of his rookie season. In fact, he played only one game, the last game of the season which didn’t matter, and he didn’t look crazy impressive or anything in it. Hill was in his second year that season, and he felt like the Chiefs messed up by picking Mahomes.

Tyreek Hill Thought Patrick Mahomes Was Trash On First Glance

After record setting seasons, an NFL MVP, and a Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes is already eyeing the NFL’s greatest when it comes to his legacy. It’s scary to imagine just how great Mahomes will and can become as he’s only played three seasons.

However, his teammate, Tyreek Hill, wasn’t a big believer of him immediately. Hill made an appearance on Showtime’s Inside the NFL in 2020, and he revealed that his first impression of Mahomes was that he was trash. Hill would say:

“I ain’t gonna cap. I ain’t gonna cap. I ain’t even gonna cap, man. When he first got there I was like, this is who y’all drafted right here? This is who y’all drafted? Hey but look, he proved me into a whole complete, I don’t know. That second year, like his quarterback mechanics were different. It was like he was spending more time with his quarterback coach, spending more time with Coach Reid, like learning the offense. Dude was like different.”

Of course, Hill has a completely different take on Mahomes now as he’s seen just how great he can be, but Hill definitely didn’t think it was coming. Most of us didn’t to be fair. After sitting out his entire rookie year, nobody expected Mahomes to come out and become the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.

However, he did it. And he’s done a lot more too. Mahomes’ other target, Travis Kelce, had a different take on Mahomes than Hill, however. In 2017 itself, Kelce said:

“[W]hat Mahomes does in practice is just unbelievable. I mean what kind of behind-the-scenes stuff that you guys haven’t seen on Sundays is Mahomes is getting better, getting more fluent, getting more comfortable just being a professional athlete and understanding the scheme and the timing, how long the seasons are, stuff like that. He’s gauging all this stuff and I think when he gets on the field eventually knowing that he is going to get the keys to the car eventually, everyone knows that, and when he does I can’t wait to see just how good he is.”

Now, Patrick Mahomes will be looking to reach his third straight Super Bowl and win his second title in just four years. Along with Hill and Kelce, the Chiefs are once more favorites in the AFC.

Given how Mahomes has played, I’m sure Hill is glad the Chiefs didn’t select Mitchell Trubisky (taken second overall) who’s now a backup or Deshaun Watson (taken 12th overall) who may not play in the NFL this year due to legal issues.
