Justin Fields is looking to take over the starting role during the Bears offseason, and according to Matt Nagy, Fields already has a killer mindset.

The rookie quarterback is leaving positive impressions on his teammates and coaching staff. The Chicago fanbase is praying that Fields can be the answer to the Bears’ quarterback woes, and a strong showing in the offseason could set Fields off on the right foot.

He made several throws during the Bears OTA’s and minicamps alongside Andy Dalton. From the videos, you can tell something special might be brewing in Chicago.

Justin Fields Highlights: Watch Bears Quarterback Make Several Throws During Bears OTA

The Bears rookie quarterback dropped in some impressive throws during the Bears OTA sessions. He’s still working to find chemistry with his new teammates, but the arm talent is clearly there:

His bomb to Damiere Byrd is something that had the Bears hyped and fired up during practice. It’s these kind of splash plays that you aim to make during practice, and it’s exciting and promising that Fields is able to get these in right now.

Second year Bears receiver Darnell Mooney also had a lot of praise for the Bears rookie:

“Just seeing the ball in the air and just how [and] where it was placed. He’s very accurate with his ball, and he understands exactly where he wants to place the ball.”

Matt Nagy also added on about Fields’ aggression:

“He has that mentality of rip your heart out. There were a couple of plays in there – and not just today but other days – where these quarterbacks are staying aggressive. And you got to see a taste of that [Wednesday] with Justin.”

He’s also a perfectionist according to Darnell Mooney which is what you love to see as a Bears fan:

“Sometimes it can get there at the right [time] but he wants it out in front of you, and he’ll give pressure to himself if it’s not there.”

Fields does have several things to improve on too, however. He fumbled two snaps in practice as he tries to adjust to playing under center (he played in the shotgun majority of his time at Ohio State), and his footwork on some throws wasn’t ideal as Matt Nagy told reporters how quarterback coach John DeFilippo was unhappy with Fields’ footwork on a particular play:

“We were in the [quarterbacks] room going through it just talking about how he can be better with his feet on a particular play. And it was a good throw. He made a real good throw. But Flip didn’t say anything about a really good throw. Now Flip always tells him when he sees a good throw, usually, but on this one he didn’t.”

However, these are fixable problems. Every rookie quarterback is going to have their growing pains no matter how successful they were in college, and Fields is the same. For right now, if he can take the breath of his teammates on any play, that’s a win.
