Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is largely the undisputed GOAT of the NBA world. However, is there a similar GOAT emerging in the NFL with Patrick Mahomes?

Mahomes is very early into his career, and therefore it’s interesting that Shannon Sharpe is already drawing comparisons to Michael Jordan. After all, most fans believe that the quarterback Mahomes will play in two days in the Super Bowl is the NFL equivalent of Michael Jordan: Tom Brady. So, how can Mahomes already be at Jordan level?

Comparing The Careers of Michael Jordan & Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes and Jordan have both had similar starts to their careers. Both athletes absolutely killed it in their first full year as a starter. For reference, Jordan averaged an incredible 28.2 points per game on his way to win the ‘Rookie of the Year’ title.

Mahomes enjoyed a similar level of dominance in 2018-19. That year, Mahomes threw for a league high 5,097 yards and 50 touchdown passes. Mahomes was named MVP as he took the Chiefs all the way to the AFC title game. A year later, Mahomes would take the Chiefs to promise land as he delivered the franchise their first Super Bowl victory, winning Super Bowl MVP in the process.

Therefore, it can be said that Mahomes started winning far earlier into his career than Jordan did. Jordan’s first championship came in the 1990-91 season, a full six years after he had been drafted. In fact, he hadn’t even sniffed the NBA title game till then.

Meanwhile, Mahomes is already set to appear in his second Super Bowl in just his first three years as a starter. If he wins, that’ll give him two titles, “just” four away from Jordan. As we all know, Jordan would three-peat and then three-peat again, making him a perfect 6-0 in the NBA finals.

However, getting to four more title games, much less winning them, is a monumental task, and so Mahomes has some work ahead of him.

Isn’t There a Player More Like Jordan in the NFL Right Now?

The answer is yes. Tom Brady has been dominating the NFL world since he was drafted, and it doesn’t look like that dominance is going to end anytime soon. Brady equals Jordan in rings with 6, but now he’ll be going for the ultimate challenge as he tries to make history with a seventh title.

There’s also this interesting take:

Winning his seventh may place Brady above Jordan in terms of the most dominant athlete, but it’s still a question that will draw heated debate from everyone.

Patrick Mahomes is looking to enter that conversation, and his early career success definitely exceeds that of Jordan’s. Thus, it might be time to start looking at these NFL Super Stars the same way we looked at Jordan.
