Patrick Mahomes Flags off the Kentucky Derby With the Opening “Riders Up” Command

Patrick Mahomes from the NFL fraternity got the opportunity to kickstart this year’s Kentucky Derby on Saturday. He announced the opening “riders up” command and flagged off the most enthralling two minutes in sports. No doubt, Mahomes nailed the opportunity to kickstart the proceedings. As expected, it took no time for this iconic moment to circulate like wildfire on social media, with fans showering their love on the Chiefs poster boy.

The Super Bowl champion was accompanied by his wife, Brittany Matthews, for the event. The duo looked stunning in their dazzling outfits. They walked the red carpet and posed for some photographs. Thereafter, Mahomes proceeded to his job, with the entire audience waiting for the opening command. Indeed, this happens to be a great honor in his professional career. Only a few from the football arena got this privilege to kick off the Kentucky Derby.

This was the 149th edition of the Kentucky Derby, with some of the greatest jockeys participating from across the world. The winning prize of $3 million was contested among 19 participants trying to exhibit “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports”. This year, it was the NFL quarterback delivering the opening command.

Mahomes took over this job from Louisville native and famous American rapper, Jack Harlow, who kicked off the race in 2022. “Ladies and gentlemen, the city of Louisville, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and sports fans worldwide. I have been waiting for this moment. Riders up!” Mahomes announced.

The “Riders Up” command has great significance in the history of this sport. As soon as the announcement resonates, jockeys mount their horses and prepare themselves for the action. This tradition was started a long time ago, but in 2012, per Daily Mail, the officials decided to invite celebrities to make this call.

Legendary head coach Sean Payton and former QB Teddy Bridgewater were among the NFL personalities who had this opportunity in the past. Similarly, Hall of Famer(NBA) Julius Erving and football coach Charlie Strong were some other prominent personalities from the sports fraternity.

The Texas product is at the helm of his profession with all the success he garnered in the 2022 season. And now, ahead of the 2023 campaign, Mahomes will play 12 holes for the iconic exhibition face-off, The Match. This year, he will be accompanied by his wingman, Travis Kelce, from the NFL family.

The duo will team up against NBA superstars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson at Wynn Las Vegas on June 29. No doubt, it will be a visual treat for sports fans worldwide. Who do you think has a better chance to contend for a win this year? The Golden State Warriors or the Kansas City Chiefs?
