“Cheap Shot”: Tony Romo’s Michael Jordan-Patrick Mahomes Analogy, While Referring to Joe Burrow as Clyde Drexler, Once Resulted in a Twitter Troll Fest

Is Patrick Mahomes-Michael Jordan a better comparison in regard to Joe Burrow-Clyde Drexler?

Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow are the two new brand ambassadors of the game after veterans like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning departed from the gridiron. They are constantly compared with the legends of the game, and it is not just restricted to the NFL. Sometimes analysts have gone on to the extent of stating that Mahomes is the Michael Jordan of Football. To keep the analogies symmetric, former NFL quarterback Tony Remo compared the Bengals Passer to Clyde Drexler. In a matter of seconds, his comments went crazy viral, with fans weighing on the similarities between them.

Back in 2020, when the Chiefs quarterback won his first Super Bowl title, the entire football fraternity was left awestruck. Analysts were finding analogies to honor his first title victory. And the first name that appeared in the minds was that of Michael Jordan. ESPN’s debating panelists, Stephen A. Smith and Marcus Spears, were among the few who crashed the internet with fiery rants on Mahomes-Jordan comparison. A while after this debate, a new comparison was drawn by Tony Remo ahead of the 2023 AFC championship round.

Tony Romo was once trolled for comparing Joe Burrow to Clyde Drexler

The Chiefs quarterback might be the ultimate slayer for his opponents, but when it comes to Burrow, the signal-caller doesn’t have a great record. Although he rectified his mistakes in the AFC title game this year, overall, Burrow has outlasted Mahomes in on several occasions.

Before the highly-anticipated AFC match-up this year, analysts were discussing their head-to-head records and praised the duo for being the next big rivals in the league. CBS Sports’ Tony Romo then hinted that Burrow vs Mahomes matchup was like Clyde Drexler squaring off against MJ. His reference was related to the 1992 NBA finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Portland Trail Blazers, where Jordan won the series 4-2 against his arch rival.

However, this unexpected comparison led to an absolute meme fest across social media. Mainly because while Jordan had a dominant 10-7 career record against Drexler, by the time Romo had made the Burrow-Drexler comparison, the Bengals QB was up 3-0 against Mahomes. One fan even went on to call Romo’s take a “cheap shot” at Drexler.

Mahomes vs Burrow head-to-head

Both the quarterbacks are generational talents, and there shouldn’t be any debate over this fact. Leading their respective sides at such a young age, and making it to the finals is not at all an easy task. However, one can’t shy away from the fact that while Patrick Mahomes leads the tally in terms of Championship Victories(2), the Bengals Passer is yet to win one. But Burrow has a better record against his arch-rival, winning three games out of four face-offs.

As per FanDuel.com, they first squared off during Week 17 of the 2021-22 regular season. Burrow sealed a great win by throwing 446 yards and 4 touchdowns. Next up, they again met each other for an AFC championship game, and Burrow came out victorious, recording a 27-24 win. However, this year, Mahomes was able to get the better of mighty Joe in the AFC championship game.

It will be interesting to see how the two stars play in the upcoming season.
