Joe Montana recently shook the NFL world with his unexpected take on the best NFL QB ever. He named Dan Marino as the ultimate GOAT QB over Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahomes and others. This came as a massive surprise for so many people, especially for Rob Parker, as he described Joe Cool’s take as a TB12 diss.

In a recent episode of ‘The Odd Couple’, Rob Parker explained how Joe Montana’s ‘Best QB’ take did not have enough facts to support the argument. He termed it a dig at the 7x Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, rather than accepting Montana’s assessment.
Joe Montana’s Take on Dan Marino vs Tom Brady
Rob Parker has weighed in on Joe Montana’s recent declaration of Dan Marino as the greatest quarterback ever. On the episode of ‘The Odd Couple,’ Parker did acknowledge the incredible talent and numbers that Marino put up in his career. However, Parker believes that it was not a fair choice to place him ahead of Tom Brady.
Parker pointed out that lack of championship victories has always been a factor that downplays Marino a bit in front of the legendary Tom Brady. Listing the talking agendas of his show, Parker said, “This is a nice way for Joe Montana to diss Tom Brady and not have to say that Tom Brady’s the greatest quarterback.”
“Let me give it to a guy who never won anything. Dan Marino was an unbelievable quarterback; He really was. When you look at the numbers and what he was doing back when they used to run the ball, but he didn’t win. And that is what always hampers people,” Rob continued.
Parker backed Brady by saying, “Tom Brady, you could argue is the most accomplished quarterback because of what he’s won and all that he accomplished”. Rob genuinely believes that Montana was not objective in his view as he says, “My point is, this is Joe Montana’s way of not giving Tom Brady his due.” Be it Brady, Marino, or Montana himself, all three are legends in their own capacities and of their own eras. However, the recent take by the San Francisco 49ers legend has certainly stirred up a debate.
NFL Twitter Reacts To Montana’s Comments
The world knows that Tom Brady used to worship Joe Montana. Reflecting on the same, Parker, during the same episode said, “I know Tom Brady grew up in the Bay Area and idolized Joe Montana.” However, it seems that this didn’t have any impact on Joe Montana when he said via Men’s Health, “I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game. People don’t talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up.” Clearly, Montana thinks that Dan Marino deserves the No. 1 QB place in NFL history.
However, the NFL world on Twitter (now X), had mixed reactions on Montana’s views. Let’s look at some of the best Tweets on the situation.

Why can’t this jealous loser just go away. He’s a bitter old man who is insanely jealous of Tom Brady. Montana is a sad pathetic tormented old man

I think if you look at the 1984 season particularly, adjusting statistics for the time, it might be the greatest season ever by any QB. If he had won that Super Bowl I think everyone would agree. As for the greatest QB ever, no way. Winning is not everything but can’t have 0 SBs.

Possibly the greatest regular-season QB in history. The guy was amazing but once the games meant something, he always folded.

While some fans engaged in the debate by highlighting the iconic 1984 season of Joe Montana, the significance of Super Bowl victories is prominent in the GOAT conversation. Some fans expressed their frustration on Montana’s comments as they labeled the NFL icon as a bitter and jealous figure for downplaying Tom Brady. In the end, comparing different eras is just not as objective as some make it sound.
