On This Day: RCB's Chris Gayle scored career-best 175* vs PWI

Chris Gayle scored career-best 175: The Universe Boss’ fourth IPL century remains a world record even after seven years.

On this day in 2013, former Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Chris Gayle had registered a world-record century during the 31st match of the sixth season of the Indian Premier League against Pune Warriors India in Bengaluru.

Gayle, who smashed his fourth IPL century off just 30 balls, still holds the record when it comes to scoring the fastest century in T20s and the Indian Premier League.

Opening the batting with Tillakaratne Dilshan (33), Gayle didn’t take too much time in getting his eye in as he scored four fours in the second over of the innings which was bowled by PWI seamer Ishwar Pandey.

Pune captain Aaron Finch’s ploy of introducing all-rounder Mitchell Marsh into the attack proved disastrous as Gayle hit him for four sixes and a four to accumulate 28 runs in the over and also smash a 17-ball half-century.

Trying everything to stop the Universe Boss, Finch introduced spin in the form of left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza in the seventh over. Perhaps in no mood to stop, Gayle hit two sixes and a four off Murtaza to leave the opposition clueless.

In the following over, 26-year old Finch himself came in to bowl. Leave aside any respite, Finch suffered a similar fate as that of his Australian teammate in Marsh as Gayle hit him for four sixes and a four.

Facing a free-hit off PWI pacer Ashok Dinda in the ninth over, Gayle hit a mountainous six to break records by surpassing the three-figure mark in just 30 balls. It is worth mentioning that all-rounder Yusuf Pathan held the record for previous fastest (37 balls) IPL century.

Gayle’s toying away with visiting bowlers continued as he eventually targeted Murtaza to hit three sixes and two fours to cross the 150-run mark in the 15th over.

Having scored 175* (67) with the help of 13 fours and 17 sixes, Gayle powered RCB into the record books as they registered the then highest-ever team total in a T20, i.e., 263-5 in 20 overs.
