Paul Reiffel wide decision: Twitterati slam Australian umpire for not calling a wide after MS Dhoni angry stare

Paul Reiffel: The Australian umpire came under the scanner for not calling a wide after initially looking to call one in Dubai.

During the 29th match of the ongoing 13th season of the Indian Premier League between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai, Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 20 runs to register their third IPL victory this season.

Chasing a 168-run target, Sunrisers got off to a mediocre start on the back of scoring 40/2 in the powerplay which included losing captain David Warner (9) and batsman Manish Pandey (4) in the fourth over.

It was overseas batsman Kane Williamson’s 13th IPL half-century which kept Hyderabad in the match as the New Zealand captain batted with immense maturity to be in sync with the situation. However, an ever-increasing required run rate appeared to ask too much out of the right-hand batsman.

Eventually, Williamson scoring 57 (39) with the help of seven fours wasn’t enough for his team as the opposition bowlers’ disciplined effort restricted Sunrisers to 147/8 in 20 overs.

As far as the Super Kings bowlers are concerned, all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and spinner Karn Sharma were the pick of them on the back of dismissing two opposition batsmen each.

On the second delivery of the penultimate over in a crunch situation, umpire Paul Reiffel came under the scanner after he didn’t call a wide delivery especially after seeming to call one initially. Just as he was about to make the signal, the Australian umpire had received an angry reaction from Dhoni.
