With the 12th season of the Indian Premier League done and dusted now, all eyes have moved to the imminent ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. As far as the Indian players are concerned, they are scheduled to play their first match against South Africa on June 5 at Southampton.

“We don’t want all personalities to be the same in the team and then you know all hell will break loose, but you need that. That kind of a passion from Virat [Kohli], the calmness from MS [Dhoni] and each player is different. Rohit [Sharma] can be different from Shikhar [Dhawan]. Kuldeep [Yadav] could be different from someone like Hardik [Pandya]. You would want that,” Shastri was quoted as saying.

Opening up on former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shastri hoped of other cricketers to watch the veteran cricketer and try to emulate his qualities it in them. “Everyone knows and they [Indian cricketers] know what he has achieved in the game.

“The stature that he has and then to see the poise and to see the humility, you know his sheer presence there, the composure he brings when he is out there batting or even during keeping is something you have just got to watch and learn and try and emulate it,” Shastri said.

Having started his coaching tenure under Dhoni, Shastri now coaches the side under Virat Kohli. On being asked about both the cricketers’ respect for each other, Shastri mentioned that he was doubtless about the same.

“I was never ever in doubt about the two of them having the kind of respect they have for each other, wanting to do a good job for each other because in the first phase of my job MS was the captain, the next half Virat was the captain. And I can see the commitment both had for each other when they played was tremendous,” Shastri added.
