Real Madrid News: Santiago Bernabeu to host Federer vs Nadal exhibition match in front of a record attendance according to reports from Spain.
The Santiago Bernabeu has hosted many great rivalries in the past. The El Classico against arch rivals Barcelona on numerous occasions being the most notable one.
However, reports have emerged that it may very likely host another great rivalry. Florentino Perez has plans to put up an exhibition match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
According to Spanish newspaper ABC, Real president Perez has informed Nadal of his plans to put on a tennis match in front of 80,000 spectators. A board meeting took place on Sunday night. There, the members were informed of the idea along with proposals to introduce a Real Madrid women’s team.
There is no word on when Perez plans to put on the spectacle. However, the stadium is currently under renovations, therefore if this match takes place, it will likely be after 2021. Roger Federer will have probably be retired by then. So, the exhibition may be his one hurrah.
Record attendance
If all goes to plan, the 80,000 attendance will break the record of the highest attendance in a tennis match. The stadium will, in all likelihood be filled. Espescially considering Nadal is one of their own. Also, both the players are in the twilight of their careers,
In fact, it will more than double the previous record of 35,681 which was set when Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams in an exhibition tie at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels. Regardless, the record is set to be broken next year anyway. The pair are set to go head to head in their African friendly in front of 50,000 in February.
Rafael Nadal leads 24-16 in head to head clashes between the two legends. He will be heavily cheered when they clash at the Bernabeu. However, the fans will not hold it against Federer if he comes out on top against the Spaniard.
Nadal and Federer are back in action at the Laver Cup next weekend where they will likely play doubles together for Team Europe.
