As unease over Thibaut Courtois’ contract situation grows, Real Madrid prepares to land the Belgian to Spanish capital.
Real Madrid is set to replace Keylor Navas as number 1 for the club since long. They have pursued Manchester United’s David de Gea in the past. This year, however, they’ve turned their eye on Chelsea’s main man.
Manchester United are all but prepared to offer de Gea a new bumper contract this summer. Real Madrid, hence, has been targeting Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois.
According to a report by the Mirror, Real has been monitoring Courtois for quite some time, and his move to Santiago Bernabeu is imminent.
The Belgian goalkeeper has only 12 months remaining in his contract. Media previously reported that Chelsea will be offering a fresh 200,000/week contract to Thibaut Courtois. Although, he has not signed any such contract with the club yet.
Real Madrid have attempted to sign a goalkeeper even when Keylor Navas has been terrific on the goal in the past. With Kiko Casilla set to leave the Los Blancos, the move for a goalkeeper becomes a priority.
Courtois has, in the past, spoken about living in Madrid. “If Real are really interested, then my personal situation would be key, yes. The family aspect, it is priceless,” Courtois said in February.
The Belgian has previously played for Atletico Madrid for three years on loan, while at Chelsea.
Courtois has played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s title winning campaigns in 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons.
Chelsea has been unable to qualify for the Champions League this season, finishing fifth in the Premier League. They lost in the round-of-16, in a rather one-sided tie to Real Madrid’s rivals, FC Barcelona.
There are also speculations that Belgian might look to run-down the contract and move for a free-transfer in 2019, which has further boosted Real Madrid’s hopes.
