Rishabh Pant fixing claim

Rishabh Pant fixing claim: BCCI official has opened up on Delhi wicket-keeper being accused of spot-fixing vs KKR.

During the 10th match of the ongoing 12th season of the Indian Premier League between Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders at Delhi, Delhi Capitals wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was accused of involvement in spot-fixing on social media platform Twitter after he seemed to predict the outcome of the ball before it was bowled.

It all happened during the fourth over of the Kolkata innings when Robin Uthappa had come out to bat after the dismissal of Nikhil Naik (7) on the bowling of DC leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

Just as Uthappa was marking his guard, Pant was heard on the stump mic as instructing the teenage bowler. It was during this time that Pant gave hints of the next ball going for a boundary. With Uthappa scoring the following delivery for a four through the off-side, numerous social media users perceived it to be clear cut case of spot-fixing.

Yeh to waise bhi chauka hai [This is going to be a boundary],” Pant was heard on the stump mic in the clip which has been trending across social media platform since last night.

Going by the semantics, Pant might have predicted the outcome correctly. However, what people missed outright was the context in which the 21-year old cricketer said those words. There are high chances of him instructing Lamichhane or captain Shreyas Iyer with respect to the fielding placement.

BCCI official passes judgement

In a recent interview with PTI, a top BCCI official also highlighted the same unnoticed perspective. “No one heard what Rishabh said before that particular sentence. He was apparently telling Shreyas Iyer to increase fielders on off-side to stop an imminent four,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying.

“Maligning a young cricketer without even knowing the details is so unfortunate. A section of media allowed the social media to insinuate and vilify a young talent without getting into details. This is so disgusting,” the official expressed disappointment on the whole furore on social media.

Talking about the match, it ended up becoming a cliffhanger as KKR wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav defended six runs in the last over to see the match entering a super over. Capitals fast bowler Kagiso Rabada emerged as the eventual winner after he defended 11 runs in the super over.
