During the fourth day of the first Test of the ongoing South Africa’s tour of India in Visakhapatnam, India opening batsman Rohit Sharma became only the sixth Indian batsman to score two centuries in one Test match.
Opening the batting with Mayank Agarwal (7), Sharma didn’t let his opening partner’s early wicket affect the team’s cause. Carrying on from where he left in the first innings, Sharma went on to cross the three-figure mark for the second time after opening the batting for the first time in Tests.
It is worth mentioning that vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was the last Indian batsman to score two centuries in the same Test. Much like Sharma, even Rahane had achieved the feat against South Africa in Delhi in 2015.
Playing at a brisk rate, Sharma had to initially make sure that he initially covered the damage done by Cheteshwar Pujara’s low strike rate. Even after Pujara scored a flurry of boundaries, Sharma continued at the same pace. Sharma’s natural approach is vital for India having a better chance at winning this match.
On the first delivery of the 29th over, Sharma ran a single off South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj to complete his half-century. It was eventually on the penultimate delivery of the 53rd over that Sharma ran a single off Vernon Philander to score his fifth Test century.
