Sheldon Cottrell catch to dismiss Steve Smith: The Windies fast bowler took an absolute blinder of a catch to dismiss Smith at Trent Bridge

During the 10th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between Australia and West Indies, the Windies fast bowler took an absolute gem of a catch to dismiss the former Aussie skipper Steve Smith.

It all happened in the 45th over of the Australian innings. Steve Smith was batting wonderfully at 73 and was looking to up the ante in the final few overs left in the innings. But Sheldon Cottrell has some other plans.

Steve Smith beautifully whipped the second delivery of the over off his pads, which was being bowled by Oshane Thomas. A brilliantly timed whip almost made it certain that the ball might cross the fence for a maximum. But, just then, out of the blue came Cottrell. He ran all the way to his left from the fine leg region towards square leg, and stuck his left hand out (which was perhaps even bigger than the Indian law’s) to pluck the cherry one-handed.

The momentum of his body was carrying him over the ropes, but he took a couple of steps inside the boundary area, after he released the ball just before crossing the boundary rope. Even Smith was literally shocked after witnessing this absolute blinder from Cottrell.

Australia finish on a high

After losing their top 5 batsmen within 17 overs, Australia showed the Cricketing fraternity, why they are the defending champions of the World Cup. While it was Steve Smith (73 runs off 103 deliveries) who steadied the Aussie ship amidst the falling wickets at the other end, it was the Aussie fast bowler- Nathan Coulter Nile’s heroics that led the Australian total to 288/10 in 49 overs. His innings of 92 off 60 deliveries was studded with 8 fours and 4 gigantic sixes.

From the Windies, Carlos Brathwaite took 3 wickets after giving away 67 runs in his 10 overs. Andre Russell, Sheldon Cottrell, and Oshane Thomas scalped 2 Aussie wickets apiece.
