Sourav Ganguly passes huge statement on MS Dhoni's omission from T20I squad vs South Africa

Ganguly passes huge statement on MS Dhoni’s omission: The former Indian captain opened up on the veteran cricketer’s omission.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly eulogized about current captain in Virat Kohli while speaking to the reporters on Saturday on the sidelines of a teachers’ conclave in the national capital. Unperturbed by India getting eliminated in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup, Ganguly believes that Kohli is getting “better and better”.

“He [Virat Kohli] is a tremendous captain, and he is getting better and better. He was heavily criticised in the IPL but even then I had said that I believe he is a good captain. He captained well in the World Cup. It’s unfortunate that India lost in the semifinal. But I think he has progressed a lot as a captain,” Ganguly was quoted as saying.

Being asked the much-discussed wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, Ganguly put to rest all comparisons of Pant with former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

“Rishabh [Pant] is not MS Dhoni, nor he will be in the next 3-4 years. It took MS 15 years to become what he is. MS is a special breed in Indian cricket. Rishabh is special too, his Test record is phenomenal,” Ganguly said.

Dhoni, who made himself unavailable from the ongoing tour of West Indies, has continued to do so for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa. Unlike plentiful fans of the legendary cricketer, Ganguly wasn’t surprised by the selectors not picking him for the three-match series.

“I didn’t expect him [Dhoni] to be picked. You can make out when they gave Rishabh a chance in West Indies that they want to persist with him. It is similar to when MS came in young, he was persistent.

“I think Virat [Kohli] is very important in this situation [Dhoni’s speculated retirement]. What he is communicating with Dhoni is very difficult to say and I don’t think anybody should jump the gun and pass a statement,” Ganguly added.

What followed for an 8-year-old was an instant adulation for both Ganguly and the sport. The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
