"Novak Djokovic Could Have All Four": Former Wimbledon Champion Rues Carlos Alcaraz Loss & Missed Calendar Slam

The recently crowned Wimbledon champion has returned home back from London. Carlos Alcaraz reflected on how this title felt a bit more special than winning the US Open last season. He mentioned that winning at the All England Club was of great significance, giving the stakes that were involved.

Amongst the two Grand Slam titles that Carlos has won, he found the win at Wimbledon unique, given the circumstances. For a first time finalist in a particular tournament, to go on and beat a player like Djokovic who hasn’t lost a match in close to five years, was a task in itself.

Why Carlos Alcaraz Finds Wimbledon Win More Special?

Last year, when Alcaraz won the US Open, it was definitely a very exclusive moment in his career. During the tournament, he registered many tough wins. However, he did not face Djokovic as the Serb was not allowed to compete. Therefore, beating Novak at a Grand Slam meant a lot to the youngster.

While speaking on his win, he stated,

“It is a little more special to win Wimbledon and for the way I have done it, beating Djokovic, who was undefeated for ten years on this central court, in the Tennis Cathedral. Being part of the history of this tournament makes it a little more special.”

Well, now that the Championships are over, his focus will shift on defending his title in New York in the coming months. This would be the first time he will be in the position of defending his crown.

Novak Djokovic back at the US Open

As far as Novak is concerned, he will be back at Flushing Meadows after missing out last year. It is a place he has seen a fair amount of success, winning the tournament thrice in the past. In fact, the last time he was competing, he ended up as the finalist, bowing out against Daniil Medvedev.

Going by the recent events in the sport, Djokovic will surely be eager to seek his revenge against the 20-year-old from El Palmar. In fact, the three-time champion has mentioned that he is keen to face the World No. 1. With the two ranked 1 and 2 in the World Rankings, we can expect the two to meet again in the final if they make it through the two weeks.

This time it would be the Spaniard as the defending champion with the Serb as the challenger. Fans can expect a similar thriller as they did last week, if they end up facing each other at the US Open 2023.
