Roger Federer recently made an appearance at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships on the 20th anniversary of his first-ever title win at the All England Club. While Federer was honoured with a special film, he also happened to watch a match featuring Andy Murray on the Centre Court. When Carlos Alcaraz, who was playing on Court 1 at the time, got to know about it, he admitted to feeling ‘jealous’ that Federer was there in the arena but did not watch his match in person, while expressing his desire that someday it happens.

It is well known now that Carlos Alcaraz has looked up to Roger Federer since childhood, so much so that he had posters of his in his bedroom, manifesting that he will be a professional tennis player like him when he grows up. Well, at least this dream did come true. And what Federer has recently said about Alcaraz is another dream come true surely for the Spaniard, who aims to win his first-ever Wimbledon title on Sunday.

Carlos Alcaraz is doing incredible things at his age: Roger Federer

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach and former World No.1, Juan Carlos Ferrero in a recent interview claimed that his superstar pupil is a ‘sick combination’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. While few can deny that completely looking at his form and talent at such a young age, Federer did so to an extent.

When the Swiss maestro was told about this, he was taken aback and chose to play it safe while encouraging Alcaraz to do bigger things in the game. He was quoted as saying in an interview with Sue Barker

“[His coach] said that? That is quite a compliment. It’s a lot to live up to. I think Carlos at his young age, the age that he is right now, he’s doing incredible things.

“I always don’t like to put too much pressure on younger players, especially like, ‘He’s going to do this.’ But he’s the type of player who says, ‘Well, I’m coming to Wimbledon, I’m coming to win. I’m coming to Paris, I’m coming to win.”
Many have pointed out the ways in which Alcaraz is hugely inspired by Federer, the mixture of aggression and elegance for instance being an example. Federer was proficient in his use of drop and slice shots. Additionally, the Roger Federer serve is known to be amongst the finest in the game, and Alcaraz somehow manages to often hold his service games successfully.
