Twitch is following up on a brilliant suggestion to replace the old controversial PogChamp emote. Users will get to see a new PogChamp every 24 hours from now.
2020 was a wild year for everyone and so far 2021 is even more wild for Twitch and more so for all of us. Three days ago, Trump supporters held demonstrations and stormed the US Capitol building as people from all over the world watched in disbelief. The ripples of the event will be felt throughout in the days to come.
The Esports and gaming world also felt the same. With many Esports personalities, gamers and pros denouncing the incident. However, there were a few who supported the actions of Trump supporters on that day.
Gootecks’ tweet and the removal of PogChamp –
Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez is an American Street Fighter player and a famous Twitch personality. The PogChamp emote is become synonymous with the Twitch stream chat. It is said that the emote was the fifth most used emote on the site. However he tweeted and urged trump supporters to continue with the unrest on January 6th.
He also said that a video about the death of a female trump supporter would be aired. Soon after many Twitch and Esports personalities strongly condemned the tweet. Some urged Twitch to remove the PogChamp emote.
so @Twitch due to this lovely statement…i think this pogchamp emote needs to be removed. pic.twitter.com/qQXrEEtIif

Twitch bans the emote and comes up with a replacement –
Many streamers had banned the emote from their channels. On January 7th, Twitch banned the emote. The company said in a series of tweets that in good conscience they could not allow the emote on their platform. Also adding that they would work with the community to come up with something much better.
Pretty soon fans and streamers started sharing their ideas about what should be done about the emote. Esports personality Sean Plott came up with the idea about creating a database of streamers. Whenever a user typed PogChamp a random face would pop up. Twitch liked the idea and so did many others.
So as Twitch said ‘ in the spirit of 2021’ Twitch viewers will get one random face every time they type in PogChamp.
You know what? In the spirit of figuring out 2021 together, let’s just roll with it for now!
Get ready for a new PogChamp every 24 hours, starting today. https://t.co/R16EyASsFx
