During the 22nd match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between India and Pakistan at Old Trafford, India vice-captain Rohit Sharma scored his 24th ODI century to lay an incredible foundation for his team.
Opening the batting with a new opening partner in Lokesh Rahul, Sharma played the senior role in an awe-inspiring 136-run opening partnership. While Rahul took his time to get his eye in, Sharma continued on his terrific form to put quick runs on the board.
The right-hand batsman also quashed the prevailing perception of his struggle against left-arm fast bowlers. Playing well against Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz, Sharma continued to register an innings which will be remembered in the times to come.
Out of India’s 53/0 in the first powerplay, Sharma had scored 37* (29) to dictate terms in the first 10 overs. On the penultimate delivery of the 12th over, Sharma hit a boundary off Pakistan leg-spinner Shadab Khan to bring up a 34-ball half-century. The feat also made him the fourth Indian batsman to score three consecutive 50+ scores at the start of the World Cup.
On the last delivery of the 30th over, Sharma hit a cut off Shadab to reach the three-figure mark.
With Rahul (57) getting out in the 24th over, the onus fell on Sharma yet again. Currently batting with India captain Virat Kohli, the team management would be hoping for the senior pair to take the attack on the opposition.
