Spain played Iran on the second match-day of Group B.

After an exciting European heavyweight clash against Portugal, Spain faced the sole winners of the first Group B-matchday, Iran. The Asian side beat Morocco in their first game. However, Spain proved to be too difficult for Iran, as they couldn’t hold the 2010 World Cup winners for long, and lost 1-0 to a Diego Costa goal.

Iran gave an impressive defensive performance, frustrating Spain and the spectators alike. Spain’s attacking prowess was wholly neutralised in the first half. However, 9 minutes into the second half, an Andres Iniesta pass went straight to Diego Costa, who tried to take a touch, but the ball hit the defender. The ball then rebounded on to Costa’s legs and went straight into the net.

The goal remained the only difference between both the sides as Spain cruised into the top two, with Iran one point behind both the European sides in the Group B. Morocco were already eliminated earlier this evening, when they lost to Portugal.

In the final match of Group B, Spain will take on Morocco, while Iran will be eager to take the final chance to qualify in a do-or-die match against Portugal.

The top two winners from Group B will meet the same from Group A, where Russia is currently first, followed by Uruguay, who beat Spain.

Here are some of the tweets from the match.
