Uruguay will set up a quarter-final clash with France in the World Cup.

It was a defensive masterclass all along for Uruguay as they beat Portugal 2-1 in the second round-of-16 match at Sochi. Edinson Cavani was the star of the match, as he scored two beautiful goals to win the match for the South American side.

Portugal dominated possession for most part of the match but failed to breach the Uruguayan defence enough to see off the match. Pepe did score a header through corner, but most of the times, the tight line of Uruguayan defence hardly left space for Portuguese attackers to create clear opportunities.

Cristiano Ronaldo was neutralised by the Uruguayan defenders, as Godin and Gimenez led a solid performance for the South Americans.

Edinson Cavani scored the first goal through a brilliant guiding header on an equally terrific long-ball from Luis Suarez. In the second half, Edinson Cavani scored again when Pepe’s poor clearance led to loss of possession.

Uruguay, with this victory, have reached the quarter-final of the World Cup. They will now meet France, who beat Argentina 4-3 in a high-intensity match earlier this evening. Portugal’s loss means that both, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have lost another opportunity to have their hands on the World Cup trophy.
