One of the most recognizable figures of the referee faction, Herb Dean is facing the flak over an alleged delayed stoppage. So, did he made a bad stoppage at UFC Fight Night 3?
At UFC Fight Island 3 where the world kept buzzing with Whittaker and Till’s ultimate showdown, Khamzat Chimaev’s record turnaround victory, and Mauricio Rua and Antonia Nogueira’s swan song. Yet, there is one incident from the night that has somewhat tarnished the glory of what otherwise could be termed as a spectacular event.
The MMA community has shown its exasperation over the way the match between Francico Trinaldo and Jai Herbert was ended. Trinaldo won the match via. TKO, and it was a clean finish, but there are doubts whether the last series of punches were even necessary, and whether the referee Herb Dean could have intervened much earlier.

In the video one can hear the commentators’ displeasure in the end. Which later ensued a heated confrontation between Dan Hardy (Commentator) and Herb Dean.
Dan Hardy wasn’t the only one expressing his annoyance, and here are some of the other reactions over the controversial finish.
Noted MMA Journalist Ariel Helwani writes, “What was the point of those extra punches? You could tell Trinaldo didn’t want to throw those but was forced to. Unnecessary.”
The safety of fighters is always a topic of discussion.

Herb Dean’s reaction
Herb Dean However, has justified his actions by stating “by no means was that a late stoppage”. The fighter turned referee, took to Instagram to address the situation, and also indirectly criticised Dan Hardy for chanting “Stop the fight”, since, only the ringside physician or the men in the fighter’s corner can only give such a directive. The official also said, he will provide further insights about his decision.
Meanwhile, UFC Senior Vice President Dave Shaw, has later conveyed the matter (Confrontation) will be investigated.
